MI5 Says China’s MSS Funded Research Involving 100+ U.K.-Linked Academics — 03.10.2026

The U.K.’s domestic intelligence and security agency, MI5, said that more than 100 U.K.-linked academics contributed to research projects funded through China’s Ministry of State Security (MSS). MI5 assesses the China General Technology Research Institute (CGTRI), also known as the China Academy of General Technology (CAGT), to be an MSS front company whose primary purpose is to fund research that directly improves Chinese espionage capabilities. China’s embassy in the U.K. called the allegations baseless and fabricated.
